The Kumasi Rotary Club has commissioned and handed over a 6-unit classroom block to Sewua community in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The facility includes; a library stocked with books, eight (8) new micro flush toilets, computer laboratory with computers, solar panel for the school and furniture for the said community .
Mr. Derrek Oware Nyarko, President of the club at the handover ceremony, explained that, the project forms part of the core values of Rotary towards the promotion of education and enhance literacy in communities as well as water and Sanitation.
He he stated that, because of the absence of basic education in the community, children between the ages of 2 and 9 years are forced to learn in a church with efforts of a volunteer teacher who only takes canteen fees from the Children.
According to him, the unfortunate part of the situation is when they are aging they realize children walk far distance to access school so they took it upon themselves to reshape the face of the school in the Sawua community.
Children walk close to 5km to attend school at Asakraka, which according to him wasn’t palatable so they made a passionate appeal to the Chiefs and the People of Sawua community and the surrounding communities to prioritize the education of their wards and ensure that the project meets its intended purposes.
He was optimistic that the existence of the school in the community will improve access to quality education and prevent School Children from walking several Kilometers to access basic education.
He appealed to the Municipal Assembly to collaborate with the Chiefs and stakeholders in the community to assume full ownership of the School facility.
Nana Effah Mensah, the Project Director and International Service Chairman indicated that, the project is worth $120,000USD to complement the vision of the Rotary Club.
He disclosed that, Bowman family paid to build the school whiles the Micro-flush Toilets, Furniture, Computers, Solar Lightning System, Text and Library Books and the rest were funded by the Rotary Foundation, Virginia Rotary Clubs: Hampton Roads, Warren County, Roanoke Valley, Salem Rotaract Club at William and Mary and Lewisburg, West Virginia and Kumasi Rotary Club, Ghana.
Mr. Amoah Awuku, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assembly, lauded the Kumasi Rotary club for coming to the aid of the community, confirmed that it was disheartening seeing children walking several kilometers to access education.
He was particularly excited with the installation of solar panels to power the computers and television since the village has no access to electricity.
Mr. Awuku pleaded with the parents and management to make good use of the facility by sending their children to school and assured them of the provision of free school uniform for the children who would attend the school and ensure that teachers are posted to the school.
Last year, the Club also handed over similar projects to the Hiamankyene Community in the Sekyere South District of Agona near Asante Mampong which is currently accommodates close to Two hundred (200) pupils.
