Food crisis: Akufo-Addo govt to blame for inactive PTA – Ashanti Regional Chair

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has attributed the current food crisis in Senior High Schools (SHS) to the previous Akufo-Addo administration’s decision to make PTAs inactive in second-cycle institutions.

He explained that the ban on PTA activities and the intimidation of headmasters regarding the Free SHS policy had a negative impact on the smooth operation of schools.

This statement follows concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS), which recently appealed to parents and guardians to assist with feeding shortages in schools. The appeal came after reports of food shortages at some schools, forcing them to ration supplies, just days after the schools reopened.

However, the Ashanti Regional PTA disagrees with CHASS, pointing out that not all parents have the financial means to contribute to solving the problem. The PTA chairman stressed the need to involve Parent-Teacher Associations in finding a sustainable solution to the food crisis.

In an interview with Channel One News, Ashanti Regional PTA Chairman Kwabena Amofa Sarpong revealed plans to engage with both school authorities and parents in the coming days to discuss potential solutions to the ongoing challenges.

“Why I say it is pathetic is that we are working with these heads and some of them don’t want to hear the name PTA, they have even changed it to PA.

“We have decided that irrespective of whatever it is, we will help by feeding our students. Because their welfare is our welfare. We’re planning to meet and make a decision. We will definitely meet the heads halfway.

“The heads are also to be blamed because of job security, they stop PTA meetings. They are our children, we will help.”
