Ghana’s movie industry is up in arms against Hon. Habib Iddrisu, First Deputy Minority Whip, for his derogatory comments about the profession.
During the vetting of Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, Iddrisu advised Dumelo to take his new role seriously, stating, “When you go to the ministry, know that you are not in your movie industry. Try to be as serious as you can” .
The Film Directors Guild of Ghana (FDGG) has through their communications Director,Mr Francis Ayaga condemned Iddrisu’s statement, labeling it “reckless” and “unfortunate.”
They argue that Iddrisu’s comments demonstrate his lack of understanding of the film industry’s significance and its contributions to Ghana’s economy ¹.

Globally, the culture and creative industry generates $2.25 trillion annually, contributing 3% to the global GDP, and employs 30 million people (UNESCO, 2021). In Ghana, the movie industry plays a crucial role in job creation, tourism, and foreign exchange earnings.
Calls for Apology and Retraction
The FDGG has demanded an unqualified apology from Iddrisu for his disparaging remarks. They also urged him to retract his statement and educate himself on the film industry’s contributions to Ghana’s economy.
