The Greater Accra Director of Education, Mrs Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, has added her voice to the call for the revival of the speaking, reading, and teaching of the Ga Language and its culture across all schools in the region.
She therefore appealed to all stakeholders to support the Ghana Education Service and the Ga Traditional Council in putting in place the right strategies to expand the acceptability of the language through hearing, speaking, and writing in the region and beyond.
Mrs Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah announced this in an address read for her by Mr Desmond Ali Gasanga, the Greater Accra Regional Cultural Coordinator, during the opening of the inter-circuit Ga Language reading festival organised by the Culture Unit of the Ledzokuku Municipal Directorate of the Education at Teshie in the Greater Accra region last Thursady.
The event, which was the first of its kind in the Municipality, was organised with support from the Ledzokuku Education Municipal Education office, Ga Headteachers, Promasidor Ghana Ltd and some individuals.
It had the theme “Our Language, Our Identity: Sustaining Ga Heritage For Future Generations” saw learners at the Junior High, Upper Primary and Lower Primary slugging it out against each other.
Contestants at the lower primary were tested in reading and comprehension, spelling and word formation, while those in the upper primary were tested in reading and comprehension, spelling and word formation, whereas those in the JHS locked horns in areas such as reading and comprehension, oral skills, spelling, translation and grammar.
Results
At the end of the competition, Ledzokuku South Circuits emerged the overall winner after scoring 365.5 points, beating its closets contestant with just half of a point after Ledzokuku West bagged 365 points to place second.
The third position went to Ledzokuku North Circuits for scoring 357point whiles Ledzokuku Central Circuit placed 4th with 319 points.
For emerging winner of the contest, Ledzokuku South Circuit took home a trophy, a certificate and products from the sponsors, Promasidor Ghana Ltd, while the three other circuits also received trophies of different sizes, a certificate each and products from the sponsor.
The Regional Director was full of praise for the Ledzokuku Municipal Directorate of Education for their effort at ensuring that their learners developed an interest in the Ga language and culture.
Mrs Theresa Tetteh, the Ledzokuku Municipal Director of Education, in her closing remarks, thanked all the circuits for the training offered to the contestants, which led to such a closely contested event.
She was particularly happy with the comportment among the contestants and their supporters, making the event very peaceful and exciting to watch.
The Municipal Director pledged to continue to promote the development of education in the Municipality and the rest of the country.
Madam Rebecca Ablorh, the Cultural officer at the Ledzokuku Municipal Directorate of Education, urged parents to ensure that they ensure that their children speak the Ga Language at home so they become very conversant with the spoken aspect very well, so they could write it when asked to do so.
She commended the various institutions and people who supported the event to be a success and pledged to continue working very hard to promote the Ga language and culture for the sake of posterity.
