MTN Celebrates 15 years of Mobile Money, aimed at investing in robust security measures to protect customers

MTN Ghana has celebrated 15 years of Mobile Money aimed at investing in robust Security measures to combat it and protect their valued Customers.

Mr Nii Adotey Mingle General Manager in-charge of Northern Business Sector at the event stated that, Fraud remains one of the prevalent issues that continues to hinder their work of promoting digital and financial inclusion in the country.

According to him, MoMo fraud is an issue they are very passionate about at MobileMoney Ltd and will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives to invest in robust security measures to combat it and protect their valued customers
He noted that, when they embarked on the journey 15 years ago, the landscape of financial services in Ghana was vastly different. Traditional banking services were inaccessible to a significant segment of the population, particularly those in rural and underserved areas.

many Ghanaians faced challenges in conducting basic financial transactions, which hindered economic growth and personal empowerment.
Mr Adotey indicated that, they at MTN recognized the gap and took on the challenge to make a meaningful difference by driving change and bringing financial services to the fingertips of every Ghanaian through the power of the mobile phone.
The theme for the year’s celebration dubbed Empowering Communities, Celebrating 15 years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion, he said encapsulates the essence of what MoMo represents and the impact it has had on the lives of many.
He disclosed that, MoMo was born out of a vision to democratize access to financial services. From its inception, their goal was clear: to leverage the power of technology to create a more inclusive financial ecosystem.
He revealed that, it started as a simple yet powerful concept, enabling people to send and receive money using their mobile phones, adding that,
over the years, the concept has evolved, and MoMo has become an indispensable part of everyday life for millions of Ghanaians, and indeed they are touching every Ghanaian household everyday.
He is of the view that, today Ghana is one of the fastest growing markets in Africa for digital payments. The growth he said has been influenced by the growing adoption of e-commerce and mobile payments by many because of the convenience and safety of the service.
He noted that, today MoMo is not just about sending money and making payments. The service has expanded into other critical aspects of our daily financial needs such as offering loans, insurance, international remittance, investments and many more.
He disclosed that, MoMo is more than just a mobile money service, it is a platform that has empowered individuals, transformed businesses, and strengthened communities.
According to him, MoMo has enabled small and medium-sized enterprises to thrive, by providing them with the tools they need to manage their finances more efficiently, and have seen how it has facilitated access to education, healthcare, and essential services, improving the quality of life for countless families.
Also, access to government services has been simplified through the ubiquitous power of your MoMo enabling government agencies to collect taxes, levies and fees seamlessly, says clearly, MoMo has bridged the gap between the banked and the unbanked, bringing financial inclusion to the forefront of our nation’s development agenda.
He reiterated that, as they celebrate the milestone, it is important to recognize the partnerships that have been instrumental in their journey, says the collaborations with regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology partners, their channel partners, Agents and Merchants and other stakeholders have been pivotal in creating an enabling environment for MoMo to thrive. He underscore that together, they have navigated challenges, seized opportunities, and driven innovation, and remain committed to fostering these partnerships as they continue to explore new horizons and expand the reach of MoMo.
Despite the successes chalked over the last 15 years, there are still some challenge face, and it is important for them to look at how they can collectively address these issues and continue to drive financial, digital and economic inclusion in Ghana.
According to the MTN General Manager in-charge of Northern Business Sector, though mobile connectivity continues to improve, there are still some coverage gaps especially in rural and remote areas and will continue to invest in digital infrastructure to promote widespread connectivity in order to expand the frontiers of digital financial inclusion.
He emphasize that every customer is the first and last line of defense, hence the need to protect their PINs and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages, or following the instructions of any random caller.
He stressed that, MTN remain committed to providing great customer experience to all their customers regardless of their location, for their primary focus is to put service support at the fingertips of their customers to minimize the need for customers to travel long distances or wait for an extended period at their touch points to have an issue resolved.
