A police officer, Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, tragically lost his life in the early hours of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, after drowning in the River Offin at Assin Asaman.

The incident occurred during a high-stakes operation against illegal mining (galamsey) organized by the Central North Regional Police Command.

Constable Dogbe’s body was recovered following a meticulous four-hour search by local police and rescue teams. He was transported to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where medical professionals confirmed his death after conducting an examination.

According to reports, suspected illegal miners fled in various directions upon seeing the police approaching, with some attempting to escape by crossing the River Offin. In the process of seizing and destroying mining equipment, Officer Dogbe lost his footing on the treacherous terrain along the riverbank, slipped into the water, and was unable to recover.

The Central North Regional Police Command has expressed deep condolences over the loss of Constable Dogbe, a dedicated officer who played a crucial role in protecting the environment and tackling illegal activities in the region. The police force has pledged to continue its operations against galamsey, despite the heavy toll this incident has taken.

A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Officer Dogbe’s death has been launched, and efforts are ongoing to address the broader issue of illegal mining in the region. This incident serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced by police officers and security personnel who put their lives on the line to protect their communities and safeguard the environment.
