Julius Debrah, the former Chief of Staff, has unequivocally distanced himself from the persistent speculation that has surrounded his potential selection as a running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the looming 2024 elections.
In a forthright statement issued on August 9, Debrah firmly asserted that he has no inclination towards assuming such a role, despite the genuine trust and respect his capabilities have garnered from certain quarters.
“I wish to dissociate myself from the sentiments expressed in the media by these groups and individuals. Although such groups and persons might be motivated by a genuine trust and belief in my personal capabilities, I wish to emphasize that I have expressed no such intention anywhere,” Julius Debrah clarified, making his stance resolutely clear.
In his message, Debrah further called on various interest groups and individuals to refrain from exerting undue pressure on Mr. Mahama to select his running mate prematurely, emphasizing that Mahama, with whom he maintains a close confidante relationship, possesses the acumen to make the right decision at the appropriate time.
“I have worked with [former] President Mahama and continue to be a close confidante of his. I have garnered enough experience working with him to know that he makes the right calls at the right time.
He is not the kind of person to be lobbied for such a position,” Debrah affirmed, highlighting Mahama’s steadfast and principled decision-making.
The speculations surrounding the possibility of Debrah being chosen as John Mahama’s running mate gained considerable momentum in recent weeks as various interest groups and individuals publicly mentioned his name in media circles.
During his tenure as Chief of Staff, Debrah served under then-President John Mahama, holding the crucial position from 2015 to 2017, a period marked by significant political and administrative responsibilities.
As the 2024 elections loom, Debrah’s firm and definitive stance, coupled with his assertion of Mr. Mahama’s decision-making prerogative, underscores the importance of patience in the selection process, ensuring that pivotal decisions are made based on the best interests of the NDC and the nation as a whole.
