The Director-General of SSNIT ,Dr John Ofori Tenkorang has expressed his satisfaction with the “remarkable” growth rate of SEED, especially in light of the participation of various informal sector workers, including driver’s unions and traders.

He noted that there were initial doubts about the programme’s effectiveness, but the substantial growth in enrolment within a year demonstrates people’s willingness to participate. The motivation to join the trust, he explained, stemmed from the significant benefits it offers.

Dr. Tenkorang went on to encourage workers in the informal sector to sign up for SSNIT, stressing on the advantages they would enjoy while highlighting the importance of securing their financial future, particularly for the time when they are no longer able to work actively

He revealed that, over the course of a year, approximately 57,000 self-employed individuals have registered with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

Before the initiation of the Self-employed Enrolment Drive (SEED) and the subsequent public awareness campaign, a mere 14,000 self-employed individuals had enrolled with SSNIT.

However, this significant growth was achieved within a year of launching the SEED programme and conducting extensive public education efforts.

Dr. Tenkorang revealed this during a media briefing at a stakeholders meeting organized by SSNIT in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The focus of the meeting was to raise awareness among informal sector workers about SEED and emphasise the importance of their enrolment in the programme.
