The General Secretary of National Democratic Congress,Mr.Johnson Asiedu Nketia has revealed that the electoral commission of Ghana is spending a whopping Ghc830m to compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 general elections.
According to him ,the Electoral Commission lied to Ghanaians for saying they are spending just Ghc390M on the register.
It is on record that Parliament has approved a budget of over GHS 390 million for the Electoral Commission to conduct the voters’ registration exercise ahead of the 2020 national elections but Mr.Asiedu Nketia said it’s a lie.
Mr.Asiedu Nketia said this today when he engaged Party communicators, sympathizers and section of the media at the SSNIT conference Hall in Kumasi.
DOCUMENTS SHOW THE AMOUNT WILL BE EXPENDED ON PROCUREMENT, RECRUITMENT, TRAINING, DATA PROCESSING, PUBLICITY AND ALLOWANCES.
But Mr.Asiedu Nketia revealed that the actual amount to be spent on the registration exercise is more than the figure the EC has told Ghanaians.
Though Over GHS161 million is expected to be spent on allowances of registration officials while the procurement of materials is expected to cost over GHS 156 million.
The registration exercise is expected to span between April and May 2020 and run for 50 days.
The Commission has in an earlier interview insisted that it is being financially prudent with the decision to compile a new voters’ register but Mr.Asiedu Nketia made it clear that NDC and other political parties will resist till the EC takes a second look at it’s budget and explain to Ghanaians as to why the change of the register.
