Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s Misguided Claims, an affront to Muslims in Ghana and Islam- Association of Liberal Muslims-Ghana

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh(NAPO), the running mate of the NPP, has sparked controversy with his recent assertions. During a campaign event in Kumasi-Bantama, he claimed that the NDC, under Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa’s leadership developed a curriculum that included Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) with LGBTQ+ content for schoolchildren.

Furthermore, he alleged that our noble Imams who teaches the doctrine of Islam via the holy Quran and the teachings of the holy prophet Mohammed peace be upon him and church leaders were assigned to influence teachers in teaching this subject.

This baseless accusation against our noble Imams is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of Muslims and a mockery of our noble religion, hence creating unnecessary division within Ghanaian society It’s essential to set the record straight. We dare NAPO to categorically mention the names of those Imams he claimed were contracted to influence the teaching of LGBTQ in our teaching and learning centres.

Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) aims to provide scientifically accurate information about human development, sexuality, reproduction, and healthy relationships. However, NAPO’s actions suggest a deliberate attempt to conflate CSE with LGBTQ+ ideologies, fueling unnecessary controversy and divisiveness.

The backlash was intensified when a textbook, intended for testing, was discovered to have LGBTQ+ content under NAPO, the then Minister of Education.
This incident raises serious concerns about NAPO’s intentions and commitment to Ghana’s cultural and social values under his ministry.

NAPO’s actions have significant implications. He contributes to a growing climate of homophobia in Ghana, where LGBTQ+ individuals already face severe discrimination and persecution. By politicizing CSE, NAPO jeopardizes the provision of accurate and comprehensive information to young people, leaving them vulnerable to misinformation and harm.

It is important to recognize the harm caused by NAPO’s misinformation and hold leaders accountable for promoting factual information and respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals. We must demand accuracy, promote inclusivity, and empower young people to think critically.

The Ghanaian public deserves truth and transparency, not divisive politics and misinformation. It’s time to focus on the real issues affecting our nation rather than fabricating controversies for political gain.

We call on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to as a matter of urgency, retracts the blasphemous statements and renders an unqualified apology to our Imams and the Muslim in Ghana at large. Hence we again call of the office of Dr. Alhaji Mahamoudu Bawumia to caution his running mate against his disrespect towards Muslims in respect of the fact that, he Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim as well.

Thank you
