The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) with Support from Bloomberg has joined the global community to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crashes Victims, with a call to action to reduce the alarming rate of road accidents in the city and beyond.

Speaking to media, the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Boadi, emphasized the importance of remembering the victims of road crashes and their families, as it serves as a stark reminder of the need to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents. “The remembrance of crashes day is very essential because we must check our road networking and road design,” he said. “Speed on roads needs to be well checked, and we must ensure that our roads are safe for all users.”

Hon. Boadi also highlighted the need for a collective effort to address the issue of road safety, urging stakeholders to work together to implement effective measures to reduce the number of accidents on the roads.

Dr. Yaw Larbi, on behalf of the CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, revealed that a significant proportion of accident cases brought to the hospital are severe and devastating. “30% of most of the accident cases brought to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are very gory and terrible,” he said. “Road accidents claim more lives than the leading diseases we know, and it’s a major public health concern that requires immediate attention.”

Akwasi Wireko Brobbey, Initiative Coordinator from Bloomberg Philanthropist, echoed the sentiments, stressing the urgent need to end or reduce road accidents. “We must work together to make our roads safer, and it’s a call to action for all of us,” he said. “The statistics are alarming, and we must take concrete steps to prevent road accidents and save lives.”

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Crashes Victims is observed annually on the third Sunday of November, and it serves as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to improve road safety and reduce the number of fatalities on the world’s roads.

The Remembrance Day was marked with Personal Medical items, bottle water, and an envelope to eight Victims at the ‘C’ Block of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

The Bloomberg Philanthropist, in partnership with the KMA and other stakeholders, is working to promote road safety and reduce the number of road accidents in the city and beyond.

The public is urged to join the fight against road accidents by reporting reckless driving, wearing seatbelts, and adhering to speed limits, among other measures. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
