In a move aimed at enhancing the quality of education in Ghana, the National Teaching Council (NTC) has announced a program to upgrade non-professional teachers to professional status.
The initiative, communicated through a letter dated October 24, 2025, and addressed to all Regional Directors of Education, marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to regulate the teaching profession.
According to the letter, signed by Prof. Smile Dzisi, Ag. Deputy Director-General, the NTC is mandated by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023) to oversee the teaching profession.
As part of its regulatory functions, the NTC began issuing licenses to professional teachers in 2021 and has now commenced the issuance of subject-based licenses to all teachers nationwide.
The program aims to support non-professional teachers in registering and obtaining licenses, with a subsidized fee of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵5,000.00) for the entire program.
Four universities – University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and two other institutions – have partnered with the NTC to offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Education to participating teachers in both public and private schools.
Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) has pledged financial support to applicants below the age of 35.
The program is expected to run between 16 to 20 weeks, commencing during the next school vacation. Non-professional teachers interested in the program are required to register through a provided link, with a deadline of November 30, 2025.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving educational standards in Ghana. By professionalizing the teaching workforce, the NTC aims to enhance teacher quality, ultimately benefiting students and the education sector as a whole.
Further details about the program are expected to be communicated in due course.
