The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has reassured the public that the Adansi Dompoasehene, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, is “alive and kicking” following a firearm‑related incident at the final funeral rites of the late mother of Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Faustilove Appiah Kannin, on Saturday, 29 November 2025.

Dr Amoakohene made the confirmation after visiting Obuasi to assess the situation.

In his statement, Dr Amoakohene revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the injury sustained by the Dompoasehene resulted from an accidental barrel burst rather than an assassination attempt.

He noted that the chief is in good health, responding positively to treatment, and has already been discharged from the Obuasi Government Hospital.

“The victim, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, Dompoasehene, is alive and kicking, and his condition is stable,” the Minister said, adding that he provided some support to the chief during his visit.

“This incident reinforces the importance of the temporary ban… The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere. Adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well‑being of all attendees,” Dr Amoakohene emphasized.

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as they continue their duties. The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, he affirmed, will monitor the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring peace, safety, and order throughout the region. The Council’s statement underscores its dedication to preserving stability in the wake of the incident and supporting affected communities.

The shooting, which occurred amidst the solemn funeral ceremony, had generated concern and speculation, with earlier reports framing it as a suspected assassination attempt .

However, the Minister’s clarification points to an accidental discharge linked to a barrel burst, shifting understanding of the event.

Police investigations are progressing, with authorities having already secured the suspect and indicating that further details will emerge as inquiries continue.

The Obuasi community and traditional leaders have been urged to adhere strictly to the firearm ban at funerals and similar gatherings to avert recurrence of such incidents.

Security officials have pledged continued collaboration with traditional authorities to reinforce safety measures at public events in the region.
