The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has officially received the leadership of the first batch of the Blue Water Guards deployed to the Ashanti Region as part of renewed efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The Blue Water Guards, who have been commissioned to protect Ghana’s water bodies, are expected to play a critical role in safeguarding rivers, streams and other vital water resources across the region from the destructive activities of illegal miners.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Amoakohene noted that the team will work closely with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and relevant local authorities to ensure effective enforcement and coordinated action against galamsey operations.

He stressed that protecting water bodies is essential to public health, environmental sustainability and the livelihoods of present and future generations.

“The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) remains fully committed to the fight against galamsey, particularly in our forests, water bodies and along major road corridors,” the Regional Minister stated. “We will continue to strengthen enforcement, enhance collaboration among stakeholders and deepen community engagement to achieve lasting results.”

Dr. Amoakohene expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership and commitment to environmental protection, as well as to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for the continuous support extended to the Ashanti Region in the fight against illegal mining.

He urged the Blue Water Guards to discharge their duties professionally and work in harmony with traditional authorities, communities and security agencies to ensure success.

The deployment of the Blue Water Guards forms part of a broader national strategy to clamp down on illegal mining and restore degraded water bodies, reaffirming government’s resolve to protect the environment and secure clean water for life.
