A heavy rainstorm has caused significant damage to the roof of the Aprade Primary School in the Oforikrom Municipality, leading to the destruction of several teaching and learning materials and raising serious concerns about the safety of pupils and staff.
In response to the incident, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Oforikrom, Hon Anwel Sadat , accompanied by officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), paid an immediate visit to the school on Tuesday morning to assess the extent of the damage and determine urgent interventions required to safeguard lives and property.
During the visit, the MCE inspected the affected classroom blocks and interacted with school authorities to obtain first-hand information on the impact of the storm. Parts of the school’s roofing structure were ripped off by the strong winds, exposing classrooms to rainfall and resulting in the destruction of books, furniture, and other essential learning materials.
Addressing teachers and community members present, the MCE expressed concern about the situation and assured them of the Municipal Assembly’s commitment to ensuring the safety of pupils and staff. He emphasized that the visit was necessitated by the need to promptly assess the structural integrity of the building and to prevent any further risk that could disrupt academic activities or endanger lives.
“The safety of our children and teachers remains our utmost priority. That is why we are here with NADMO to conduct a thorough assessment and put in place immediate measures to address the situation,” the MCE stated.
Officers from NADMO conducted technical assessments to evaluate the level of damage and the stability of the affected structures. Following the inspection, the team recommended urgent remedial actions, including temporary roofing solutions and safety precautions to prevent access to unsafe sections of the building.
The Municipal Chief Executive assured the school community that the necessary reports have been compiled and submitted to the appropriate authorities, adding that steps are already being taken to mobilize resources for temporary support and emergency repairs. According to him, these interventions are aimed at restoring a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment as quickly as possible.
School authorities welcomed the swift response from the Municipal Assembly and NADMO, noting that the timely intervention would help minimize disruptions to teaching and learning. They also appealed for expedited support to enable the school to resume full academic activities without delay.
The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly reiterated its commitment to improving educational infrastructure across the municipality and pledged to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure that Aprade Primary School receives the needed support to recover from the storm’s impact.
