The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned what it describes as widespread incidents of bribery, inducement, and vote buying allegedly perpetrated by some aspirants during the party’s parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
In an official statement issued from the party’s National Secretariat on 7th February 2026, the NDC said its national executives had been alerted to disturbing reports of financial inducement and unethical practices that undermined the credibility of the internal electoral process.
The statement, signed by the party’s General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, expressed the party’s firm disapproval of the alleged misconduct, describing it as a direct affront to the values, principles, and democratic ideals upon which the NDC is founded.
According to the release, the attention of the national leadership was drawn to “widespread incidents of inducement and vote buying allegedly perpetuated by some aspirants” during the primaries held in the constituency.
The party noted that such actions, if proven, represent a serious betrayal of the party’s internal democratic culture and the broader reset agenda the NDC continues to champion as part of its national vision.
“The party vehemently condemns these actions in no uncertain terms as they represent an affront to the values and principles of the party,” the statement emphasized.
Full-Scale Investigation Underway
In response to the alleged irregularities, the NDC announced that it is immediately instituting a full-scale investigation into the matter.
The leadership assured party members and the general public that swift action would be taken against any candidate or individual found culpable after the investigations.
“The party is immediately instituting a full-scale investigation into this matter and will take swift action against any candidate found culpable,” the statement added.
This move, observers say, signals the party’s renewed determination to uphold discipline, fairness, and transparency within its ranks ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a stern warning, the NDC stated that going forward, the party would not hesitate to impose more drastic sanctions should similar incidents occur in future internal elections.
The party hinted that such sanctions could extend as far as the cancellation of elections in constituencies where vote buying and inducement are detected.
“The party also wishes to make it clear that in the future, more drastic sanctions would be taken including possibly cancelling elections, when such incidents come to the attention of the party,” the statement warned.
The issue of vote buying and inducement has become a growing concern in Ghana’s political landscape, with many critics arguing that such practices weaken democratic accountability and distort the will of party delegates and grassroots supporters.
Political analysts say the NDC’s swift response could serve as a strong signal to aspirants across the country that the party intends to protect the integrity of its internal processes.
The development comes at a time when the NDC is positioning itself as a party committed to reform, accountability, and ethical leadership.
Party insiders believe the Ayawaso East incident, if properly addressed, could become a defining moment in the party’s efforts to restore public confidence and strengthen internal cohesion.
The NDC has therefore urged all members, aspirants, and supporters to uphold the highest standards of conduct and refrain from acts that undermine party unity and democratic practice.
As investigations commence, the spotlight remains on Ayawaso East, with many awaiting the outcome of the party’s probe and the possible sanctions that may follow.
The NDC’s decisive stance underscores its message that bribery and inducement have no place in its internal elections and that discipline will be enforced to safeguard the party’s democratic credentials.
