A new chapter in youth empowerment and skills development has begun in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipality as beneficiaries of the pilot phase of Ghana’s National Apprenticeship Program (NAP) have received equipment to commence their vocational training.

The initiative, spearheaded by the government under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, is designed to reduce youth unemployment, address the widening skills gap, and promote sustainable economic growth by equipping young people with practical vocational skills and tools to build their own livelihoods.

The distribution ceremony, held in Barekese, brought together government representatives, local authorities, program coordinators, and community leaders who gathered to encourage the beneficiaries as they begin their apprenticeship journey.

Representing the Ashanti Regional Coordinator, Hon. Patrick Opoku Fofle, Program Officer of the National Youth Authority, Hon. Opoku Afreh Samuel, underscored the significance of the program in empowering young people across the region.
He urged the beneficiaries to take the opportunity seriously and remain committed to learning the skills necessary to become economically independent.
“This program is a major step towards empowering our youth. It is not only about receiving equipment but about building a future,” he said. “We encourage all beneficiaries to remain disciplined and dedicated throughout their training so they can eventually establish their own businesses and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.”
Hon. Afreh Samuel also called on master craft persons participating in the apprenticeship scheme to provide quality mentorship and ensure trainees receive practical, hands-on training that meets industry standards.
Also addressing the gathering, Hon. Awudu Sumaila, the Constituency Secretary and District Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme, commended the government for introducing policies that prioritize youth empowerment and community development.
He expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for implementing initiatives that directly benefit young people in communities such as Atwima Nwabiagya North.
According to him, the apprenticeship program demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for the youth while strengthening Ghana’s workforce through skills training.
“This initiative is a clear indication that the government is focused on building the capacity of young people,” he stated. “We are grateful that Atwima Nwabiagya North has been selected as a beneficiary of this important program.”
Several local officials were present at the ceremony to show their support for the beneficiaries and the implementation of the program. Among them were Hon. Ishak, Hon. Arafat, Hon. Kudos, and Yaa Salam, who all commended the initiative and encouraged participants to remain focused on their training.
In his remarks, the Municipal Chief Executive for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Hon. Mba Zechariah Alenbilla, congratulated the beneficiaries and reiterated the importance of vocational training in addressing unemployment among young people.
He praised the government for prioritizing youth employment through initiatives such as the National Apprenticeship Program and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that development projects and opportunities reach every part of the constituency.
“This program will transform the lives of many young people in our municipality,” the MCE said. “By equipping our youth with practical skills and tools, we are laying the foundation for entrepreneurship, job creation, and long-term economic growth.”
Hon. Alenbilla further encouraged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by demonstrating dedication, discipline, and perseverance throughout their training.
The National Apprenticeship Program forms part of a broader national agenda aimed at empowering young people through vocational education and skills development. By partnering with experienced master craft persons, the initiative provides structured training in various trades while supplying trainees with essential equipment to support their learning and future careers.

Stakeholders believe that the successful implementation of the program in districts such as Barekese will help reduce unemployment, promote self-reliance among young people, and stimulate local economic activity.
For many of the beneficiaries, receiving the equipment marks the beginning of a transformative journey toward financial independence and professional growth.

As the pilot phase progresses, authorities hope the program will expand to reach more communities across the country, ensuring that thousands of Ghanaian youth acquire the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving economy.
