Former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Hon. George Kofi Arthur, has officially announced his intention to contest for the position of Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), setting the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested race within the party’s regional hierarchy.
Hon. Arthur, who served in Parliament from 2005 to 2017, is seeking to succeed the outgoing Western Regional Chairman, Nana Kojo Toku, and has pledged to usher in a new era of growth, unity, and inclusiveness within the party.
In a declaration statement issued on April 18, 2026, the seasoned politician articulated a bold vision anchored on what he described as moving the party “from addition to multiplication.” According to him, the Western Region holds immense political potential for the NDC, and harnessing that potential requires deliberate efforts to strengthen internal structures and foster a deep sense of belonging among members.
He emphasized that his leadership would prioritize unity across all levels of the party, while decisively addressing any form of discrimination that undermines cohesion. “The time has come for us to build a stronger, more inclusive NDC that recognizes and rewards the contributions of every member, regardless of status or background,” he stated.
A central pillar of Hon. Arthur’s agenda is the empowerment of key party stakeholders, including women, youth, polling station executives, and grassroots organizers. He underscored the critical role these groups play in electoral success, noting that sustainable political growth must be driven from the base upward.
He also paid tribute to the pioneer members of the party—often referred to as the backbone of the NDC—pledging to ensure that their sacrifices and contributions are duly acknowledged and supported. “Our elders laid the foundation of this great party. It is our responsibility to preserve their legacy while building a future that benefits all,” he added.
Widely respected for his grassroots appeal, Hon. Arthur brings to the race a wealth of experience spanning politics, education, and engineering.
A trained teacher and construction expert, he is credited with championing development-oriented initiatives during his tenure in Parliament. His deep connection with constituents in Amenfi Central and beyond has earned him a reputation as a leader who understands the needs of the ordinary party member.
Supporters have described him as “the youth’s investor,” highlighting his consistent efforts to mentor and uplift young people within the political space. Others see him as a unifying figure capable of bridging the gap between party executives and the grassroots, a quality they believe is essential for revitalizing the NDC’s fortunes in the Western Region.
Political observers note that the Western Region remains a strategic stronghold in Ghana’s electoral landscape, making the position of Regional Chairman particularly significant ahead of future national elections. Hon. Arthur’s entry into the race is therefore expected to inject renewed energy and debate into the party’s internal processes.
As the campaign unfolds, party members and delegates will be keenly watching how aspirants outline their visions for strengthening the NDC’s presence and competitiveness in the region. For Hon. George Kofi Arthur, the message is clear: a call for transformation, unity, and a collective push toward a more formidable political force in the Western Region.
