Parliament Seeks Clarity on Reported Detention of Asante Akyem North MP in Amsterdam

Ghana’s Parliament has officially acknowledged reports of the detention of the Member of Parliament for Kwame Ohene Frimpong in Amsterdam, with the leadership of the House initiating diplomatic engagement to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, confirmed that Parliament is aware of the development and is actively seeking details through Ghana’s diplomatic channels in the Netherlands.

According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament together with parliamentary leadership is in contact with Ghana’s mission in the Netherlands to verify the circumstances surrounding the reported detention of the legislator.

“Parliament takes notice of reported detention of Asante Akyem North MP, Kwame Ohene Frimpong in Amsterdam; Speaker & leadership in touch with Ghana’s mission for details,” the statement indicated.

Authorities, however, have not yet disclosed the reasons behind the alleged detention, neither has any official information been released concerning the MP’s current condition or legal status.

Hon. Frimpong, who has represented the Asante Akyem North Constituency since 2024, is currently serving in Parliament at a time the House is considering several major legislative matters.

The development has generated widespread public interest, with many awaiting official clarification from both Ghanaian diplomatic authorities and Dutch officials.

Parliament assured the public that further updates would be communicated once official information is received from Ghana’s mission in Amsterdam.
