The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, on Thursday, was hailed by traders in Kumasi .
The traders who were from the Bantama, Abrepo, Suame and North Suntreso markets stormed the entrance of Angel Fm, a local radio station in Kumasi to engage the Minister after he had explained the education component of the 2022 budget and its impact on education development in the country to the people.
Some of the questions they asked Dr Adutwum were ‘what could be done to make the Free Senior High School initiative a permanent feature so no government can change it so that the nation would continue to benefit from such a good policy’.
Sensitive questions
Madam Afia Akyaa, a plantain seller from Abrepo market also asked the Minister when the Student Loan Trust would begin the ‘No Guarantor Loan Policy’ for tertiary students for her daughter to also benefit among other questions.
She eulogised the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo government for the good education policies it had rolled out for the good of the nation and urged the government to continue introducing more pro-poor interventions into the country to improve the lives of the people.
The traders apart from asking the Minister questions also appealed to the government to get closer to them with more of such radio engagements for them to know more about government policies it was rolling out.
Response
Dr Adutwum who was surprised at the invasion by the traders spent some time explaining issues to them in connection with how the government wanted to share the national cake to benefit all Ghanaians irrespective of location, political affiliation, ethnicity and other social standings.
He explained that the Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government would continue to promote good policies in all facets of the economy and urged all Ghanaians to support the government as it put in place measures to improve the lives of all.
Background
Following the reading of the 2022 financial statement of the nation by the Minister for Finance recently, the Education Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe has been engaging radio stations in the Ashanti region to explain into detail the education component of the budget to the people.
The selection of Ashanti region was due to its strategic location in the country as radio stations in the region could be reached by residents in the nearby regions of the country.
This is the second time in two weeks that traders in Kumasi have besieged the entrance of radio stations after the Minister had granted radio interviews to the people.
Dr Adutwum was last week ‘mobbed’ in a similar way after a radio interview at Hello Fm in Kumasi.
