MTN-Ghana to provide skills training for 40 young people

MTN Ghana in partnership with the National Youth Authority (NYA) is to train over 40 young people as part of this year’s MTN 21 days Y’ello Care in the Eastern Region.

The two weeks training programme which has commenced, will see beneficiaries receive training in beads making, cosmetology, which includes makeup, manicure and pedicure and online digital marketing in web development.

The MTN’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care is an annual programme where staff of MTN undertakes voluntary exercise to serve the community where the MTN Group operates from 1st to 21st June.

It was instituted 12 years ago and has grown to become one of the key and exciting activities on the MTN calendar.

This year’s campaign, under the theme “Creating a Brighter Future for our Youth” will assist in implementing initiatives aimed at youth empowerment and development.

Addressing participants at the launch of the 21 days of Y’ello care in Koforidua, Mr Raymond Tibson, Team Leader for Eastern Region, MTN Ghana said, Ghana has a youthful population, with approximately 57% of the population being below the age of 25 years.This he said is the greatest assets any nation could have.

However, one of the issues confronting the country is unemployment and the rate in Ghana is expected to be 2% by the end of the second quarter of this year.

In the long-term, the Ghana unemployment rate is projected to trend around 2.70 per cent in 2020.

Mr Tibson said, it is important to empower the youth with employable skills because they are the backbone of the nation and they need the support of Corporate Ghana in that regard.

He said MTN believes that by embarking on such projects across Ghana, the company would help develop skills and create opportunities for the youth in selected communities.

Ms Marian Mansa Mina, Eastern Regional Director of National Youth Authority (NYA), said, the training will help to equip the beneficiaries and they can also transfer it to other people who want to be trained on the job.
