Residents of Abuakwah and surrounding communities in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality in the Ashanti Region are grappling with growing concerns over deteriorating conditions at the Abuakwah Poly-Clinic, as authorities are being called upon to urgently address critical infrastructural and operational challenges threatening healthcare delivery at the facility.
According to reports by Oheneba Dankwah Jupitar Owusu, the clinic is currently facing a series of pressing issues that are significantly undermining its ability to provide quality medical care to patients. These challenges, he noted, have persisted for some time and now require immediate attention from both local and national stakeholders.
Foremost among the concerns is a severe shortage of bed space, a situation that has left many patients without proper accommodation, particularly during peak hours and emergency situations. The lack of adequate beds has not only strained the facility’s capacity but has also raised fears about compromised patient care and safety.
Equally troubling is the absence of rest areas for doctors and health personnel on night duty. Medical staff are reportedly forced to endure long hours without suitable spaces to rest, a situation that could affect their efficiency, alertness, and overall well-being. Health experts warn that such conditions may inadvertently impact the quality of care delivered to patients.
Sanitation has also emerged as a major concern at the facility. The clinic is said to be grappling with inadequate toilet facilities, affecting staff, patients, and administrative personnel alike. This has created discomfort and poses potential public health risks, particularly in a healthcare setting where hygiene is paramount.
Perhaps most alarming is the deteriorating state of the clinic’s theatre, where a leaking roof has compromised both functionality and safety. The situation raises serious concerns about the ability of the facility to carry out surgical procedures under safe and sterile conditions, further deepening the urgency for intervention.
In light of these challenges, the clinic’s administrators have made a passionate appeal to the Municipal Chief Executive, Wisdom Osei Boamah, and the Member of Parliament, Shirley Kyei, to step in and facilitate immediate remedial action. The call underscores the need for collaborative efforts between government, local authorities, and development partners to restore the facility to acceptable standards.
The unfolding situation at Abuakwah Poly-Clinic reflects broader systemic pressures facing Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rapidly growing communities where demand for services continues to outpace available resources. Health workers and patients alike are bearing the brunt of these deficiencies, navigating daily challenges that go beyond medical care to include basic human needs such as rest and sanitation.
Residents and stakeholders have echoed the call for urgent intervention, emphasizing that timely action will not only improve working conditions for healthcare providers but also ensure safer and more dignified care for patients.
As the appeals intensify, all eyes are now on the relevant authorities to respond swiftly and decisively, to prevent further deterioration and safeguard the health and well-being of the Abuakwah community.
