The Action People’s Party is urging President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency in all areas affected by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

This call comes after a tragic helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including the Defence Minister ,Dr Omane Boamah,Alhaji Muntala Mohammed Environment Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, first national vice chairman of the NDC, who were on their route to Obuasi to launch a responsible cooperative mining initiative.

According to Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, founder and leader of the Action People’s Party, the crash is a direct result of the destruction caused by illegal mining activities in the country. He believes that declaring a state of emergency is the only way to effectively combat galamsey and prevent further loss of life.

The party leader cited the tragic death of Major Mahama, who was killed by a mob in Denkyira Obuasi in 2017, as an example of the devastating impact of galamsey on the nation. He emphasized that the recent helicopter crash has brought pain and sorrow to the entire nation, and that decisive action is needed to address the issue.

The call for a state of emergency aims to empower authorities to take drastic measures to curb illegal mining and protect the country’s natural resources.

The Action People’s Party hopes that the President will consider their plea and take immediate action to address the galamsey menace.
