A pressure group known as Asante Concerned Youth has mounted a passionate appeal to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect a presidential candidate of Asante descent in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries, arguing that such a choice would accelerate development in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana.

Addressing the media at a press conference held on Tuesday in Kumasi, Mr. Nyamekye Ebenezer, President of the Asante Concerned Youth, said the group’s call was driven by historical precedent, political loyalty, and the urgent development needs of the Ashanti Region, which he described as the electoral backbone of the NPP.

According to Mr. Nyamekye, the Ashanti Region has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the NPP since the inception of the Fourth Republic, yet the region continues to lag behind in critical areas of infrastructure and socio-economic development.

He stressed that placing an Asante at the helm of the party and ultimately the nation would help correct this imbalance.

“It is only fair and reasonable that an Asante is given the opportunity to lead the NPP and become President of Ghana. History has shown us that when an Asante leads, development follows,” he stated.

Mr. Nyamekye cited the presidency of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, an indigene of the Ashanti Region, as a shining example of what Asante leadership can achieve.

He recalled the period as one marked by visible national progress, economic stability, and major infrastructural investments that benefited not only Ashanti but the entire country.

“We all witnessed the massive development Ghana enjoyed under President Kufuor. That era speaks for itself. If another Asante is given the chance, the story will not be different—development will be widespread and impactful,” he noted.

The Asante Concerned Youth leader further emphasized that the NPP’s ideological roots and political strength are deeply intertwined with the Ashanti Region. He argued that the party’s founding principles, grassroots support, and electoral victories have largely been sustained by the commitment and sacrifices of Asante supporters over the years.

“The NPP has its roots in Asanteman. Our people have stood firmly behind this party in both good and difficult times.

Electing an Asante presidential candidate will not only strengthen party unity but also energize the base and bring a total change to the country,” Mr. Nyamekye asserted.

He clarified that the group’s appeal was not intended to promote tribalism but rather to advocate for fairness, recognition, and strategic leadership that would consolidate the party’s fortunes ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The press conference concluded with a call on party delegates to reflect carefully on the future of the NPP and Ghana as they prepare to cast their votes in the primaries.

The Asante Concerned Youth expressed confidence that delegates would make a decision they believe best serves the interest of the party and the nation.

As the NPP’s internal contest gathers momentum, appeals such as this highlight the growing intensity of regional and ideological considerations shaping the race for the party’s flagbearership.
