The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene has held a high-level engagement with Managers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, drawn from all transmission sub-regions, at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply and improve service delivery across the region.
The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of ECG’s performance over the past year, alongside in-depth discussions on emerging operational challenges and both ongoing and planned projects aimed at enhancing the stability and reliability of power distribution in the Ashanti Region.
Addressing the gathering, the Regional Minister commended the ECG management and staff for their dedication and hard work, noting that their efforts have been instrumental in sustaining power supply in one of Ghana’s most economically vibrant regions.
He, however, urged the company to give urgent attention to a number of communities that continue to experience unstable and unreliable electricity supply, stressing the need for swift and practical interventions to address these persistent challenges.
To improve service delivery and ensure a resilient power system across the region, the Minister outlined several critical installations and infrastructure projects currently underway.
These include the upgrade of a GRIDCo transformer at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) with a new 145MVA transformer to significantly enhance power capacity and stability.
Additionally, new substations are under construction at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu, a move expected to decentralize power distribution and reduce pressure on existing facilities.
A major sub-transmission line project from Adoato to Barekese is also ongoing to improve electricity supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, Mowire, and surrounding communities.
This project is further expected to improve power supply to the Ghana Water Company’s Treatment Plant at Barekese, thereby boosting water production and supply to Greater Kumasi.
Further interventions include the construction of a sub-transmission line from Anwomaso to the Airport Substation to enhance electricity supply to the Kumasi Airport, Suame Magazine, and the wider Greater Kumasi area.
Another sub-transmission line from Fawoade to Agona is also under construction to improve power reliability along that corridor.
The Minister also disclosed that the Ridge Bulk Supply Point is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade, while noting the successful completion of substations at Afari and Sewuah Hospitals in the previous year—an achievement he described as critical to improving healthcare delivery and emergency response in the region.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Ashanti Regional Minister emphasized that the Regional Coordinating Council will continue to work closely with ECG, GRIDCo, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure a stable and reliable power supply that supports households, businesses, health facilities, and the broader socio-economic development agenda of the Ashanti Region.
He expressed optimism that the completion of these projects will significantly reduce power outages, enhance efficiency, and position the region for sustained industrial growth and improved quality of life for residents.
