A major road project in the Bono Region, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Big Push Agenda, is under threat following an alleged decision by the Department of Urban Roads to reduce the scope of work.
The 34-kilometer Sunyani Outer Ring Road project, awarded to Kofi Job Constructions, is being constructed as a dual carriage road, but without median works.
Checks by OTEC News indicate that over 20 major sinkholes have formed in the median, posing a danger to commuters and community members.
The contractor has only managed to close seven of them at its own cost, while the remaining 13 are still awaiting attention due to financial difficulties.
A source from the construction firm reveals that they have notified the Department of Urban Roads to review the scope of work, but their calls have fallen on deaf ears.
Road construction expert, Wilberforce Ntim, has cautioned that working on the dual carriage road without the median could be disastrous.
Residents from beneficiary communities, including Fiapre, Abesim, and New Dormaa, are worried about the situation and are calling on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Roads, Governors Adgoza, to intervene and ensure the median is fixed.
The communities are concerned about the safety and quality of the road, and experts agree that both works must be done in harmony to ensure the project’s success.
