The Chairman of the Seven-Member Committee probing an alleged plot to sack the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has hinted the Police Chief could face the Committee.

The Chair, Samuel Atta Akyea revealed that the evidence being presented to the Committee by witnesses in their testimony has caused the need for the IGP to be invited.

The Committee Chairman had noted several times that some of the comments from the witnesses, especially Commissioner of Police, George Mensah makes it seem the IGP is being tried in absentia and it would be fair to give the accused a hearing.

Samuel Atta Akyea explained further that the presence of the IGP will prevent their findings from being seen as one-sided in view of some allegations leveled against him by some of the witnesses.

Speaking to Journalists after last week Friday’s hearing after being asked if the IGP would be invited he hinted: “It’s a likelihood, and it’s all to do with how the evidence is evolving. So it’s a likelihood because the facts we should place before Parliament should not be shoddy. It should not be one-sided, so it is a likelihood.

Dampare is the Worst IGP

Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, one of the implicated police officers who appeared before the ad-hoc committee of Parliament over leaked audio accused Dr George Akuffo Dampare of mismanaging the Ghana Police Service describing him as the worst IGP in his 31-year-old working history with the service.

During interrogation by the seven-member committee of parliament, COP George Alex Mensah did not mince words in stating his opposition to the leadership style of his boss

The Director-General of Police of Operations on terminal leave ending retirement who was heard in the audio saying the IGP is not correct after appearing before the committee, also denied making such statements but reiterated that Dr George Akuffo Dampare is not managing the police service well.

“Hon Chair, I will not deny that fact today, tomorrow or the next day. I will make that statement again that the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) is not managing the Police Service well. It is something I will not run away from. I will say it everywhere, anywhere that I go and you can do your own investigations, call Police officers underground and find out from them”. COP George Alex Mensah told the Committee.

He added “Honourable member and honourable chair, several opportunities and what I said yesterday if you give me the opportunity today, I will say it again. For me, for the 31 years I have been in the service, he is the worst IGP ever.”

IGP has gagged everyone

COP George Alex Mensah also claimed that the Inspector General of Police has gagged everyone in the service and no one is able to rise up against his ills.

He alleged that even the Public Affairs Directorate which is supposed to be the mouthpiece of the service has been suppressed since he assumed office challenging committee members to investigate the matter for themselves.
