The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing vehicle security and reducing vehicular offences in the country with the introduction of a new vehicle registration system.

The system, set to be rolled out in 2026, was unveiled at a sensitization programme held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, today.

The programme, attended by stakeholders including driver unions, garages, and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), aimed to educate participants on the processes involved in the new system and its significance.

Foster Asante Esq., Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Services at DVLA, emphasized that the revised registration framework is designed to enhance vehicle security and help curb the rising cases of vehicular offences in the country.

“The new system is a significant improvement over the current one, and we believe it will go a long way in reducing the incidence of vehicle theft and other related crimes,” Mr. Asante said. “We are committed to ensuring that the rollout is smooth and widely accepted, and we appreciate the input of stakeholders in this regard.”

Stakeholders at the programme were engaged and participatory, raising questions and suggestions that helped shape the discussion.

Mr. Asante expressed satisfaction with the level of engagement, noting that the feedback will be used to improve the system.

“We are pleased with the level of interest and engagement from stakeholders,” he said. “Their input will help us identify and address any challenges that may arise during the rollout, ensuring that the system is widely accepted and effective.”

Some stakeholders, including representatives from driver unions and garages, commended the DVLA for the initiative, pledging their full support for its implementation.

“The explanations provided by the DVLA have convinced us of the system’s benefits,” said a stakeholder. “We are happy to support the initiative and look forward to its successful rollout.”

The new vehicle registration system is expected to be rolled out across the country in 2026, with the DVLA working closely with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.

The DVLA is responsible for ensuring road safety and regulating the use of vehicles in Ghana. The new vehicle registration system is part of its efforts to improve vehicle security and reduce vehicular offences in the country.
