Replacing brake pads at home can save you money and ensure your vehicle’s braking system remains in good condition.

Here are some easy steps to follow based on MechanicBase’s recommendations.

Gather Materials: Prepare the necessary tools, including a lug wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, jack, jack stands, new brake pads, and brake grease. Ensure you have the correct brake pads for your specific vehicle.

Safety Precautions: Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Wear safety glasses and work gloves throughout the process.

Loosen Lug Nuts: Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where you’re replacing the brake pads. Do not remove them completely at this stage.

Lift the Vehicle: Use a jack to lift the vehicle off the ground and secure it with jack stands for safety. Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.

Remove the Wheel: Completely remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel to access the brake caliper and rotor.

Remove Brake Caliper: Locate the brake caliper, which is held in place by bolts or guide pins. Remove these bolts and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor.

Replace Brake Pads: Take out the old brake pads from the caliper. Install the new brake pads, ensuring they are positioned correctly and fit snugly.

Reset Brake Caliper: Before reattaching the caliper, use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the piston back into the caliper. This step is necessary to accommodate the new, thicker brake pads.

Reinstall Caliper and Wheel: Slide the caliper back onto the rotor and secure it with the bolts or guide pins. Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.

Lower the Vehicle and Test: Carefully lower the vehicle, then use a lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts securely. Test the brakes by gently applying pressure to the brake pedal. Confirm that the brakes feel firm and responsive.
