The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has embarked on an initiative to educate students on the importance of responsible electricity and water usage.

Approximately 800 students of Bekwai Wesley Senior High School were engaged through the “I am Young and Responsible” program, which aims to promote sustainable habits and conservation among students at the Senior High School level in the Ashanti Region.

During the engagement, the students learned about PURC’s mandate, including the Commission’s role in regulating public utilities. This knowledge will empower them to understand the importance of utility regulation and its impact on their daily lives. The students also gained insight into consumer complaint management, learning about the types of complaints that can be lodged with the Commission.

The program placed a strong emphasis on water and electricity conservation, highlighting the essentials for promoting conservation and reducing waste while in school and at home. The students learned about the importance of adopting sustainable habits and the role they can play in contributing to a more environmentally friendly future.

The engagement also focused on safe electricity usage, recognizing the potential dangers of electricity, such as electrocution, and learning prevention strategies. By understanding the risks associated with electricity and taking steps to mitigate them, the students can ensure a safer environment for themselves and their communities.

To facilitate future interactions between the students, their relations, and the PURC, the Regional Office distributed contact leaflets. This initiative will enable the students to reach out to the Commission with questions, concerns, or complaints, fostering a stronger relationship between the PURC and the community.

The “I am Young and Responsible” program is a commendable initiative that empowers the next generation to take ownership of their utility usage and promotes sustainable habits. By educating students on responsible electricity and water usage, the PURC is contributing to a more environmentally conscious and responsible society.

The engagement with Bekwai Wesley SHS students is a testament to the PURC’s commitment to promoting utility regulation, conservation, and safety. As the Commission continues to implement its initiatives, it is poised to make a positive impact on the lives of Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

By empowering the next generation with knowledge and skills, the PURC is shaping a brighter future for the country.
