In a forceful address to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in Manhyia South, Nana Agyenim Boateng, popularly known as “Gyataba,” positioned Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo, as the only candidate fit to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of Dr Adutwum’s ongoing campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Gyataba — a member of Dr Adutwum’s campaign team — asserted that the NPP is not ready to present a “mere flagbearer” for 2028 but a President prepared to “rule the country Ghana.”
Gyataba described Dr Adutwum as a “real replica” of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, stressing that his qualities, intelligence and even physical appearance mirror those of Kufuor.
“If the NPP wants massive votes and to win power in election 2028, then delegates must vote for Dr Adutwum because he is a real replica of former President Agyekum Kufuor,” Gyataba said, speaking in plain language to the delegates. He added that Dr Adutwum’s “message and his development of Ghana at heart” make him the candidate capable of securing a massive victory for the party in 2028.
According to Gyataba, Dr Adutwum’s track record as Education Minister — notably his stewardship of STEM education expansion and reforms in technical and vocational training — demonstrates the leadership depth and “presidential material” the NPP needs. He warned that the party’s chances in 2028 hinge on selecting a power‑winning candidate rather than a symbolic flagbearer, and Dr Adutwum fits that description. “NPP is not ready to present a flagbearer in election 2028 but a President who is prepared to rule the country Ghana, and that person is Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum,” he emphasized .
The remarks were made during a vibrant interaction with delegates from Manhyia South, part of Dr Adutwum’s regional campaign tour. Gyataba highlighted that Dr Adutwum’s “qualities, intelligence and physical appearance portray” a leadership style reminiscent of Kufuor, which he believes will resonate with voters and secure a decisive win. He urged delegates across the Ashanti Region to unite behind Dr Adutwum, noting that as the only Ashanti‑based aspirant, he stands the strongest chance of returning the NPP to power in 2028.
Earlier coverage indicates that Gyataba has been actively rallying support for Dr Adutwum, describing him as the most capable candidate to lead the NPP to victory. He has called on delegates to view Dr Adutwum’s candidacy as a “power‑winning” opportunity, stressing that the former minister possesses a clear developmental vision and a results‑oriented leadership style anchored on integrity and discipline — traits the party needs to rebuild its image after the 2024 defeat .
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who is currently the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, has already declared his intention to contest the NPP flagbearership, pledging a “clean campaign” focused on his achievements in education and his vision for national development. His nomination for the flagbearership race, slated for January 31, 2026, has been met with growing grassroots endorsement, particularly in the Ashanti Region .
The NPP’s 2028 flagbearership contest is shaping up to be keenly contested, with other potential candidates also expected to throw their hats in the ring. Nonetheless, Gyataba’s assertion that Dr Adutwum is a “replica of former President Kufuor” underscores the strategic emphasis being placed on continuity of proven leadership qualities and the desire to recapture the party’s former electoral strength.
As the campaign tour continues across the Ashanti Region, stakeholders will be watching closely how delegates respond to Gyataba’s call for a “President ready to rule Ghana” in the form of Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and what impact his “replica of Kufuor” narrative has on the party’s primary race and prospects in the 2028 general elections.
