The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed an immediate investigation into allegations surrounding the unauthorised withdrawal of GH₵400,000 from the mobile money account of a mobile money agent at Kibi.
The directive follows the circulation of a viral video on social media in which claims were made that some police personnel were involved in the withdrawal of the large sum from the agent’s account without proper authorisation.
In response to the growing public concern generated by the video, the IGP has tasked the Ghana Police Service’s internal oversight body, the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
According to a brief statement issued by the police administration, the alleged victim has already been contacted by investigators and is currently cooperating with the inquiry to help establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The police leadership has assured the public that the investigation will be conducted with transparency and professionalism, stressing that any officer found culpable will face the appropriate disciplinary or legal consequences in accordance with the law.
The directive by the IGP underscores the police administration’s commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism, and public trust within the service. Authorities say the probe will carefully examine the circumstances under which the alleged withdrawal occurred and determine whether due procedures were followed by the officers involved.
The viral video that triggered the investigation has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many members of the public calling for swift action and accountability.
The police administration has reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed about developments in the case. Officials indicated that once the investigation by the PPSB is completed, the findings and any subsequent actions taken will be communicated to the public.
The leadership of the Ghana Police Service has further urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to take its course, assuring that justice and professionalism will guide the handling of the matter.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of oversight and accountability within law enforcement institutions, particularly in matters that affect public confidence in the security services. Investigators are expected to examine digital transaction records, witness testimonies, and other relevant evidence as part of efforts to establish the full facts surrounding the alleged withdrawal.
