Kumasi Mayor Launches Round 2 of Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has officially launched the Round 2 of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund in partnership with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

This initiative is part of a global program being implemented in 90 cities across five continents, aiming to empower young people between the ages of 15 and 24 to co-create and lead climate solutions.

The City of Kumasi’s participation in the program is a significant step towards fostering a more sustainable future.

Speaking at the launched today,the Mayor indicated,the KMA has successfully completed Round 1 of the Youth Climate Action Fund, which saw 14 youth groups receive funding to implement climate projects that engaged 2,400 young people.

According to him, building on this success, Round 2 offers cities the opportunity to deepen collaboration, support more impactful projects, and inspire the next generation of local youth leaders.

He said,in Round 2, the KMA has received US$100,000 to fund youth-led climate initiatives.

A total of 54 proposals were submitted by youth groups within the metropolis, and after a comprehensive evaluation process, 26 proposals have been selected to receive microgrants ranging from US$1,000 to US$5,000. The selected projects include innovative initiatives such as plastic upcycling, sustainable briquette production, waste segregation, and composting, among others.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi,congratulated the winners and commended all applicants for their commitment to effecting positive change in the community.

He emphasized the importance of working diligently to implement the projects and make a lasting impact on the environment. The Mayor also urged all youth groups to strive towards a greener and more sustainable future for the city of Kumasi.

The launch of Round 2 of the Youth Climate Action Fund coincided with World Earth Day, a significant reminder of the shared responsibility to nurture the environment, combat climate change, and foster sustainable practices. The Mayor called on all citizens to stand united in their commitment to protect and preserve the planet for future generations.
