The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) Kumasi Metro and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Kumasi Metro-Health Directorate, recently commemorated the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day under the global theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.” The event was marked with a special gathering at Islamic Senior High School, where 5,000 sanitary pads were distributed to selected basic and senior high schools in Kumasi to support girls in managing their menstrual health with dignity.

Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, who led the delegation, emphasized the government’s and parents’ commitment to empowering young girls to reach their full potential. He encouraged students to aspire to leadership, assuring them of government support in creating a conducive learning environment. Hon. Agyeman Boadi also urged the girls to take menstrual hygiene seriously, highlighting its role in building self-confidence and improving academic performance. He further encouraged all students to focus on their studies, reminding them that they are the future assets of the nation.

Madam Joan Quarshie Jnr, the Girl-Child Coordinator at GES, educated the students on the importance of personal hygiene. Madam Winifred Darko from the Metro Health Directorate and Madam Bertha Berko from Suntreso Government Hospital also took the students through a detailed session on menstrual hygiene management. The experts emphasized the need for girls to prioritize their menstrual health, using sanitary products and practicing good hygiene to prevent infections and maintain their dignity.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed globally on May 28th each year to break taboos, raise awareness, and advocate for menstrual health and hygiene for all women and girls. The KMA’s commemoration of this day is a significant step towards promoting menstrual hygiene and supporting girls in managing their periods with dignity. By providing sanitary pads and educating girls on menstrual hygiene, the KMA is empowering them to take control of their health and well-being.

The commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day in Kumasi is a testament to the KMA’s commitment to promoting the health and well-being of girls in the metropolis. By working together with stakeholders, the KMA can create a supportive environment that enables girls to reach their full potential. As Hon. Agyeman Boadi noted, “Together, we can create a #PeriodFriendlyWorld where girls can manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence.”
