The Sekyere Kumawu District is set to intensify efforts to preserve its natural resources, following a high-level meeting between the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Kwasi Amankwaa, and a delegation from the Forestry Commission.
The meeting underscores the local government’s commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable land management, and protection of the region’s vital forest reserves.
Hon. Kwasi Amankwah reaffirmed the district’s dedication to the national “Green Ghana” agenda, highlighting the need to address escalating challenges posed by illegal logging, encroachment, and unauthorized farming within protected zones.
The DCE emphasized that environmental protection is crucial to regional security and economic stability, and the local government will no longer tolerate activities that jeopardize the district’s biodiversity.
Dr. Amoakohene, a key representative, highlighted the long-term vision for the region, emphasizing the partnership’s moral imperative. “We’re resolute in working with state institutions to safeguard our environment and ensure a greener, safer, and more prosperous future,” he stated.
The partnership aims to transform Kumawu into a model for community-led conservation, with expected outcomes including reduced timber theft, increased public awareness, and restoration of local ecosystems. The DCE’s pledge of support is expected to translate into logistical assistance for forestry guards and more stringent oversight by traditional authorities.
The meeting signifies a proactive shift in local governance, integrating environmental protection into the district’s development plan.
The partnership promises to protect the local climate, secure water bodies, and create sustainable jobs in eco-tourism and managed forestry.
