One person has been confirmed dead and 62 others are in critical condition at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and Kenop Care Hospital after the bus in which they were traveling got involved in an accident on the Kwahu Atibie mountain.

It is unclear what caused the accident but the bus with registration number GE 7652-15 belonging to Monack Football Club in Ningo Prampram, with players on board while descending the mountain, got involved in the accident trapping 5 of the players under and killing one on the spot.

The players were returning home after a football tournament at Kwahu Obo.

It took the timely intervention of the Nkawkaw Fire Command, with help from other road users, to rescue those trapped under the bus before rushing them to the two hospitals.

D02 Samuel Mante, the Nkawkaw fire service commander, narrating the incident said, “A bus carrying footballers from Ningo Prampram was involved in a tragic accident this dawn, as they were leaving after a match. Upon arriving at the scene, we found 63 people, including one fatality and several others with severe injuries. We promptly mobilized the injured to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.”

Some drivers who assisted in the rescue operation called on the government on the need to fix streetlights on that stretch to help reduce the daily accidents, especially at night.

One said, “We’re facing a significant challenge here, particularly as drivers. The absence of streetlights in this area makes it extremely difficult for us to navigate during nighttime hours, posing a serious safety risk.”
