The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has praised the people of Jema for their unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and their role in the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Mr. Mahmud Kabore, at the Jema Environmental Stewardship Day & 1st Anniversary of the Jema Anti-GALAMSEY Advocacy movement, the Minister celebrated the community’s courage and unity in rejecting galamsey activities.

“At a time when illegal mining continues to threaten our rivers, farmlands, and the future of our country, Jema stands tall as one of the few communities that has remained completely galamsey-free,” Mr. Kabore stated.

The Minister’s remarks highlighted the community’s dedication to preserving their environment and natural resources. “They have protected their rivers, preserved their cocoa farms, and defended their land with discipline and purpose,” Mr. Kabore said, adding that the Minister’s commitment to seeing Ghana’s waters run clean again and forests restored is genuine and unwavering.

Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah’s “Reset Agenda” is aimed at leaving behind a country where future generations can inherit a healthy environment, safe rivers, and fertile land. The Minister believes that if other communities follow Jema’s example, the fight against galamsey can be won.

“Jema has shown that the fight is not impossible; it simply takes community will and environmental patriotism,” Mr. Kabore said. “May their example inspire us all. Together, we can reclaim our environment and restore the beauty of our homeland.”

The Jema community’s achievement is a testament to the power of community-led initiatives in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. The Minister’s recognition of their efforts is expected to inspire other communities to take similar action against galamsey and promote environmental stewardship.

The event was attended by community leaders, environmental activists, and government officials, all of whom echoed the Minister’s call for collective action against illegal mining and environmental degradation.
