MTN Ghana has announced plans to invest $250 million in its network infrastructure in 2025, focusing on fibre expansion, service quality improvement, and digital empowerment across the country.

The telecommunications company revealed the investment during its annual Media and Stakeholder Engagement Forum held in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region. The forum, now in its eleventh year, brought together more than 50 journalists and stakeholders from across the region, including Hohoe, Keta, Aflao and Sogakope.

Mrs Georgina Fiagbenu-Asare, Head of Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, said the investment aligns with the company’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving customer experience and supporting Ghana’s digital economy.

“We are not just building a network—we are building the digital backbone of the nation,” she said. “Our fibre expansion and infrastructure upgrades are critical to meeting the rising demand for high-speed, reliable internet services.”

According to Mrs Fiagbenu-Asare, the company is laying new fibre optic lines across various communities to expand coverage and increase internet speeds. She emphasised that the rollout is designed to bridge the digital divide, especially in underserved areas.

The forum differed from previous editions by adopting a panel discussion format instead of formal presentations. The conversation was moderated by Joy FM journalist Ms Ivy Setordjie, who also serves as Vice Chairperson of the Volta Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA). The discussions focused on MTN’s innovations, challenges, and commitment to digital and social transformation.

Mrs Fiagbenu-Asare also highlighted MTN’s ongoing initiatives to train young people in digital skills. These programmes, she said, are part of a long-term effort to empower Ghana’s youth and prepare them for opportunities in a fast-evolving digital economy.

“We want to ensure that young Ghanaians are equipped with the tools and knowledge to thrive in today’s technology-driven world,” she said.

Beyond technology investments, MTN Ghana continues to support healthcare and community development projects through the MTN Ghana Foundation. Recent initiatives include the construction of an ultra-modern maternity block for the Keta Government Hospital and the ongoing development of an Accident and Emergency Centre at the Ho Municipal Hospital.

“These are not one-off donations,” she added. “They are long-term commitments to the communities we serve.”

Despite its progress, MTN Ghana faces ongoing challenges such as fibre cuts, power supply issues, and vandalism of network equipment. Mrs Fiagbenu-Asare acknowledged these setbacks but assured stakeholders that the company is taking steps to mitigate their impact and maintain uninterrupted services.

Participants at the forum praised MTN for its transparency and willingness to engage with the media and regional stakeholders. Many described the event as a valuable opportunity to better understand the company’s priorities and future direction.

As MTN Ghana prepares to implement its $250 million investment plan, it aims to reinforce its role as a leader in digital innovation and infrastructure development, while supporting Ghana’s broader socio-economic advancement.
