NDC Ashanti Region Condemns Intimidation and Harassment of Members by NPP Officials

286

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region wishes to draw the attention of the public to the ongoing deliberate harassment of our members by key officers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). These reprehensible actions are not only a blatant disregard for the democratic rights of our members but also a direct threat to the peace and stability of our region.

In a disturbing video that has come to our attention, the Member of Parliament for Tafo Constituency is seen forcibly taking off an NDC-branded T-shirt from a supporter and replacing it with an NPP-branded shirt. This act of coercion is not only an infringement on the individual’s rights but also a clear indication of the NPP’s desperation to impose their failing ideology on the people of Ashanti.

In another video clip from Ejisu, the Regional Chairman of the NPP, Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is seen forcibly removing a shirt from an NDC supporter against her will. Following this incident, the supporter, in an act of courage, discarded the shirt and publicly denounced the NPP and their unscrupulous methods of intimidation. Since then, the women involved have received anonymous threats to their lives, aimed at silencing them for standing up against the NPP’s oppressive tactics.

We hereby call on Chairman Wontumi to immediately bring his “boys” to order. Let it be known that he will be held personally responsible for any harm that befalls our supporters who are being threatened and harassed.

Furthermore, the NDC has lodged a formal complaint with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, urging them to enforce the laws of Ghana and protect the rights of all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation. We also call on the Peace Council and all voices of conscience to take judicial notice of these deliberate and illegal actions by the NPP and their leaders.

The NDC is resolute in our commitment to protecting our members and defending the laws of our nation. We urge the NPP to focus on their campaign and address the myriad of issues facing their failing government as they prepare for their imminent transition to opposition.

We call on all peace-loving Ghanaians to remain vigilant and report any further acts of intimidation to the appropriate authorities. The NDC will not be intimidated, and we will continue to stand firm in defense of democracy and the rights of our members.

Thank you.

Signed:
Dr Frank Amoakohene
Ashanti Regional Secretary
