NDC disability desk condemns violent attack on deaf supporter in Western North Region

211
The NDC Disability Desk is deeply disturbed by the recent violent attack on one of our deaf supporters by persons affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Asawinso A, a  community in the Bibiani municipal area of the Western North Region. This heinous act, which
was captured and broadcasted on XYZ TV, has sent shockwaves through our communities and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address political violence in Ghana.
The footage and images displayed on national television are not just alarming; they are a blatant violation of the rights and dignity of a Person with Disability, especially without
provocation.
The victim, Samson Adjei, popularly known as Kofi Kaah, was riding slowly past an NPP campaign float when the campaigners unduly harassed him and plucked fingers of plantain
from the bunch he was carrying on his motorbike. In reaction to his verbal protest, he was pushed to the ground and subjected to a merciless mob-beating. In addition to blows and
kicks, he was struck severally with the blunt end of his cutlass.
Being deaf, he could not hear
what his assailants were saying, nether could he speak to them. He was revived after he collapsed from the beating and sent to the hospital for treatment.
While recovering, his face
and several parts of his body are swollen and his vision has been affected as he finds it difficult adjusting to light. It is believed that he was subjected to this level of violence because of his
known affiliation to the NDC.
Such behavior is not only unacceptable: it also undermines the very foundation of our democratic principles where every citizen is free to be associated to any group of persons of any political persuasion and should feel safe to express beliefs without fear of intimidation and violence.
This incident raises serious concerns about the atmosphere of political intolerance that is permeating our society. It highlights a troubling trend where supporters of opposing parties
resort to violence rather than engaging in constructive dialogue.
 The NDC Disability Desk
firmly believes that political discourse should be rooted in respect and civility, not hostility and aggression.
The attackers’ boastful demeanor, claiming immunity from consequences for their actions is particularly alarming. It reflects a dangerous mindset that disregards the rule of law and the
principles of accountability that are supposed to govern our nation.
We must collectively reject this culture of impunity and ensure that those who perpetuate violence are held
accountable for their actions.
We urge the Ghana Police Service in the Western North Region to prioritize this case and take immediate action against the perpetrators. It is crucial that law enforcement demonstrates its
commitment to upholding justice and protecting all citizens, especially those who are
vulnerable.
It is imperative that justice is served, not only for the victim but for all citizens who deserve to live in a society free from fear and intimidation.
We entreat the police and other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this evil act are
brought to book.
We also appeal to institutions tasked to ensure that peace prevails before, during and after elections to follow up on this incident and make sure that justice is upheld. In this respect, we call on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the Peace Council to follow closely on this case to help secure a just outcome.
The NDC Disability Desk stands resolutely against any form of political violence and discrimination. We are committed to advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities
and ensuring that their voices are heard and respected in the political arena. We call on all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation, to join us in condemning this violence and to
promote a culture of peace, respect, and understanding.
As we move forward, let us remember that our strength as a nation lies in our ability to engage with one another in a respectful manner, regardless of differing opinions.
Together, we can
build a more inclusive and harmonious society where every individual, including those with disabilities, can freely express their political beliefs without fear
