Hon. Anwel Sadat, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Oforikrom, represented the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, at the National Celebration of the International Year of Co-operatives (IYC 2025) held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on November 21, 2025.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment in collaboration with the Ghana Co-operatives Council, brought together stakeholders to highlight the crucial role co-operatives play in national development.
In delivering the Regional Minister’s speech, Hon. Sadat reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the co-operative sector through improved governance, digital innovation, access to finance, and supportive policy frameworks.
He emphasized that co-operatives remain key partners in driving inclusive growth, job creation, and community empowerment across the country.
Hon. Sadat highlighted the significant contributions of co-operatives to Ghana’s economy, including employment generation, poverty reduction, and social integration.
He noted that co-operatives have been instrumental in promoting economic resilience, particularly in rural areas, and have helped to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable groups, including women and youth.
Hon. Sadat assured the co-operative sector of the government’s unwavering support, citing initiatives aimed at enhancing their capacity, promoting digitalization, and improving access to finance. He emphasized the importance of co-operatives in achieving the government’s development agenda, particularly in the areas of job creation, poverty reduction, and economic growth.
As MCE, Hon. Sadat pledged the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly’s commitment to working closely with co-operative groups, including farmers, traders, artisans, and savings and credit unions, to ensure they receive the support and opportunities needed to thrive. He emphasized the municipality’s resolve to build a resilient, co-operative-driven economy that benefits all residents.
The IYC 2025 celebration concluded with a call to action, urging all stakeholders to continue promoting the co-operative movement and its values of solidarity, equity, and mutual support. Participants recognized the critical role co-operatives play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the sector.
The event was attended by representatives from government agencies, co-operative organizations, and development partners, who all pledged their support for the growth and development of the co-operative sector in Ghana.
