Data released by the Water Resources Commission indicates a notable decrease in turbidity levels in five key water bodies across Ghana between February 2025 and July 2025.

Turbidity, measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), is a key indicator of water quality.

Turbidity Levels in Key Water Bodies.

– Dadieso – River Bia: Decreased from 5,450 NTU to 372 NTU.

– Adiembra – River Offin: Decreased from 5,740 NTU to 2,205 NTU.

– Osino – River Birem: Decreased from 4,960 NTU to 4,505 NTU

According to Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, these improvements reflect the positive strides being made in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) under the current administration .

He said, high turbidity levels can negatively impact aquatic life and increase water treatment costs.

The Water Resources Commission’s data suggests that efforts to combat illegal mining are yielding results in reducing water pollution.

While progress has been made, officials emphasize the need for continued measures to protect Ghana’s water resources from further degradation due to illegal mining activities .
