The colour of your car can say a lot about you as a person, according to a psychologist – and it’s not just about making a statement on the road.
A psychologist has shed light on the intriguing connection between the colour of the car you choose and your personality, revealing that your choice of hue could be more telling than you think.
When purchasing a vehicle, considerations such as brand, model, and cost are paramount, as well as whether it’s petrol, diesel or electric, but the colour is also a crucial decision that reflects your personal statement to the world.
Colour psychologist Sophie Dearman, speaking for the International Drivers Association, delved into the significance of your car’s shade, stating: “Every colour has a psychological message behind it.
“While not everyone who drives a black car is seeking power, nor every red car owner is a rebel, our preferences do often mirror aspects of our personalities and values.”
Dearman explained what your car’s colour may indicate about your personality traits, from the classic black shade to grey, red, and green.
Black signifies a refined disposition, according to the psychologist.
Black: elegance and power
Black cars, which make up around 20 percent of vehicles on the road, are often chosen by individuals with a penchant for power and control, Sophie suggested.
She added: “It can also reflect a taste for elegance, sophistication, and a timeless appeal, aligning well with the British reputation for refinement and class.”
White: purity and optimism
White cars, trailing behind silver in popularity on the UK’s roads, embody values such as purity, simplicity, and optimism.
Sophie noted: “White is considered fresh and modern, and choosing a white car may suggest a forward-thinking, innovative spirit.”
Grey suggests a practical personality.
Grey: practical and responsible
Another favoured shade, grey, signifies someone who is practical and responsible. Adding to this analysis, Sophie said: “In the sometimes dreary British weather, grey cars tend to hide dirt and grime well, an advantage for busy people who prioritise function over showiness. This colour may reveal an understated, reliable personality.”
Blue: calm and stable
For those who drive blue vehicles, they are likely personified by calmness and stability. Sophie commented: “Choosing a blue car might indicate a relaxed, peaceful temperament and a preference for consistency and reliability. It’s a classic choice that can denote a certain kind of tradition-loving individual.”
Red: passionate and rebellious
Though less common, the bold hue of red ignites associations of energy, passion, and “somewhat rebellious spirit”. Sophie believes that an owner of a red car can be viewed as “willing to stand out from the crowd” marking their own path.
Green: harmony and balance
Green isn’t a common colour for a car, but those who pick it are likely lovers of nature, being at harmony and in balance. Sophie added: “The British love for gardens, parks, and the countryside can be reflected in the choice of a green car.
“It’s a nod to the environment and perhaps a statement of one’s commitment to sustainability and eco-consciousness.”
Yellow and orange: optimism and creativity
Yellow and orange are other colours that aren’t often spotted, but can suggest someone who has a “cheerful, sunny disposition and creative spirit”, Sophie explained to The Mirror.
Someone who has such a brightly-coloured car is also likely to be “extroverted, fun-loving, and possibly a bit eccentric”.
