The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited have relaunched the sustainable development project of Cleaning and Greening greater Kumasi with a renewed pledge keeping the cities clean and green.
The project, according to Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Madam Gloria Anti will include the provision and installation of waste bins along the principal streets of the central business district and public spaces in the metropolis, municipal and district Assemblies. They will also help the RCC to evacuate aged refused to pave way for other developmental projects.
The project is also aimed at advocating the need for attitudinal change towards proper waste disposal and the planting of trees, weeding and painting of streets, roads and interchange in and around the metropolis.
The sanitation situation within the Ashanti Region has been a source of worry to residents.
Indiscriminate dumping of refuse has resulted in choked drains as areas like; Dr Mensah. Kejetia, Alabar, Subin, the Central Business district and Kumasi central market while other MMDAs like Asokwa municipal, Kwadaso, Oforikrom,Kwabre East, Atwima Nwiabiagya South, Ejisu and Bosomtwe district has the same sanitation problem.
Madam Gloria Anti said, although the Region has made efforts towards enhancing the sanitation situation in the city, some residents still engage in the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and the flouting of sanitation by-laws.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon Simon Osei Mensah said the core objective of the project was to rid the city of filth and advocate for attitudinal change in the Assembly and the district’s waste management practices as well as encourage people to grow more trees.
He indicated that police, military, fire service, immigrations, prison officers and other stakeholders will help the project while they have begun with the deployment of some personnels to go round and educate the public on the need to keep their surroundings clean.
He also said the Region has began the enforcement of its sanitation by-laws to arrest and prosecute persons who litter and other sanitation offences.
He also called on the media to use their platforms to educate the public on issues bothering on sanitation.
On behalf of the MMDAs, the MCE for Oforikrom municipal Assembly, Madan Gloria Timah Gambrah urge the general public to ensure proper sanitary practices within the Region.
The Zoomlion Ghana limited made a donation of waste bins, truck and some tricycles to help in the collection of refuse.
