Reheating foods using the microwave is one of the easiest and widest used methods worldwide but did you know that certain foods become toxic once heated in the microwave?

Here are foods which should never be reheated using a microwave;

1. Rice

Unknown to many, rice contains micro bacteria which can produce spores that when reheated become toxic resulting in stomach upsets and vomiting. The spores produced by the micro bacteria are highly heat resistant.

2. Chicken

The microwave heats food from the outside inwards to the inside thus in most cases may not kill all the bacteria present in food. Salmonella which may be present in chicken makes reheating by microwave highly inadvisable since it is a highly heat resistant bacteria.

3. Leafy greens

This includes spinach, kales and ‘mrenda’. When heated in a microwave, the nitrates present in the leafy greens change to nitrosamines which are carcinogenic. It is therefore advisable to reheat the greens by use of a conventional oven.

4. Potatoes

Cooked potatoes should never be reheated since it encourages the growth of botulism which is heat resistant thus resulting in food poisoning. Re-cooking potatoes are the best method to re-heat.

5. Hard-boiled eggs

Reheating hardboiled eggs in a microwave is one of the most common mistakes made by people. Eggs contain moisture which when reheated turn into steam building high pressure inside the egg. Dipping an egg in hot water for 15minutes is the best advisable method to reheat.
