Past Students of Kumasi Academy ( AKUNINI) in the Ashanti Region have commissioned an ultra modern Science laboratory for the school.
In an interview with the press, the National President of AKUNINI Past Students Association, Dr. Kwabena Dapaa Siakwan stated that the 9.6 billion laboratory facility was constructed by the past students through contributions from members of the association.
He described the laboratory as the first of its kind in Ghana and it would also help to enhance teaching and learning in the school.
Adding that, the association has considered coming up with other intervention programs including putting up facilities for other departments of the school.
Dr Kwabena Dapaa also disclosed that the doors of KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL are open for any Senior High School who wants to learn from them how they were able to put up such a monumental Science laboratory.
He appealed to the school authorities to take very good care of the facility to maintain it’s beauty to serve it’s purpose. He then promise to create a maintenance fund that will be handled by both the school and the Akunini global.
Adding that the association has considered coming up with other interventions including putting up facilities for other departments of the school.
On his part, the Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum commended the association, stating that the facility is not a regular science lab but rather a 21st century STEM laboratory.
“All the schools across the country will be looking at your example. An example of an old students association that put up a top level 21st century science laboratory”.
He assured that the Ministry of Education will support the school with science equipment for it to become one of the STEM schools.
Yaw Adutwum continued that not only is government building new STEM schools but is also transforming existing schools to become STEM schools. “But since you (KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL) have led the way, you have made the job easier.
So making you one of the STEM schools is something I can commit to you today because you have already began…therefore as the Minster of Education I am going to consider you one of the STEM schools that the President wants to transform and build in the country”.
Mr Samuel Gato, headmaster of the school thanks the association for the wonderful project and promise to take good care of facility.
He then urge government to support them with dinning hall since the students are over populated and can not occupied in the old dinning hall unless they move in batches.
