The first ever regional cross country athletes competition has been held in Ahafo Ano South West district in the Ashanti region towards the selection of the best to represent the region to compete with the other fifteen regions this year’s national competition at Tamale this month.
Twenty(20) males and females were selected for final training ahead of National competition to be held at Tamale in the Northern region.
The Ashanti regional version which was held outside Kumasi,the regional capital had primary school pupils as low as Seven (7) years participated and successfully completing the over eight (8) miles distance race from starting point of Abodease community to Kunsu-Wioso to the surprised of Director General of National Sports Authority (NSA),Nananom,Sports Masters of various schools among other stakeholders.
This year’s country cross competition is on the theme ” Harnessing Sports Talents in Ashanti”.
About Four hundred (400) athletes drawn from various schools from the region participated in the competition.
Noah Wumboriche from Asante Mampong was adjudged first with 25:17.68 in the male division.
Professor Peter Twumasi, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) lauded all the participants for their commitment to make the event a successful one, and urged those been selected not to relax but keep training hard to ensure their victory in the upcoming national competition to make the region proud.
He disclosed that, those been selected would be provided with coaches to have a two weeks a training session to enhanced their readiness for the big event.
The Director General took the opportunity to advice parents not to give up on their wards who may not be academically good but good in sports but encourage them in any field they could perform better to enable them realizes their dreams and becomes responsible adults in future.
