Panacea Pharmaceuticals Launches New Diabetes Drug (GLIKIT)

Panacea Pharmaceuticals Limited, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Ghana has launched a “diabetes drug” called “GLIKIT” at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

GLIKIT, which sole purpose is to help reduce and maintain blood sugar levels of diabetic patients.

Dr. Nana Yaw Ampiah-Amoah, Head of Marketing and Sales, Panacea Pharmaceuticals disclosed that “diabetes management” is all about “affordable diabetic drugs” being made “accessible” to “diabetic patients”. Explaining that if the drugs are not made affordable, patients tend to stop taken them, leading to their organs being damaged.
Among these organs that would be damaged are Eyes(blindness), Brain(stroke), Kindney(its failure).
Acknowledging the “dialysis uproar” and National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) implementation of “Free Dialysis” from December 1, Dr. Ampiah-Amoah indicated that funds being invested in this “policy” can be kept in reserve, by curbing “diabetic issues” in the country.
For this to be achieved, Dr. Ampiah-Amoah urged the government (NHIA) to incorporate “GLIKIT” in its list of diabetic drugs. By which, he disclosed will reduce the number of “dialysis issues” stemming from “diabetic issues”, and wasn’t managed well.
Emphasising the importance of NHIA listing of GLIKIT, Dr. Nana Yaw Ampiah-Amoah indicated that this will make the drug “available and afford” to diabetic patients.
Dr. Ampiah-Amoah acknowledged that there is a “diabetic drug”, having similar effects as GLIKIT; in terms of “blood sugar reduction”, on the market going for an amount of GHC650, but GLIKIT is priced at GHC200, noting its “certification to use” by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
According to Dr. Nana Yaw Ampiah-Amoah, GLIKIT has been endorsed by both Dr. Osei Sarfo-Kantanka, Head of Endocrinology, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Prof. Ernest Yorke, Endocrinologist at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Dr. Ampiah-Amoah disclosed that Ghanaian populace as well as “diabetic patients” were factored during GLIKIT’s “production and pricing”, to make it “affordable for all”.
