The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Akatsi South Constituency of the Volta Region, Japhet Festus Gbede, has launched a scathing criticism of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) demonstration, describing it as a noisy exhibition of desperation for political relevance, intellectual bankruptcy and misplaced priorities.
The demonstration, organised under the banner “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika”, centres on demands for accountability over expenditure associated with the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, particularly a reported GH¢16.4 million discrepancy, as well as concerns surrounding the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
Reacting to the demonstration in a Facebook post, Mr. Gbede questioned the substance and broader political significance of the protest, arguing that opposition politics must transcend street demonstrations and be anchored in constructive engagement, credible alternatives and responsible national discourse.
He maintained that while demonstrations remain a legitimate instrument of democratic accountability, political parties must demonstrate consistency, intellectual honesty and an unwavering commitment to accountability, irrespective of whose political interests are affected.
Mr. Gbede further questioned what he considers the NPP’s selective approach to accountability, particularly regarding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
He argued that the party should demonstrate similar enthusiasm in demanding the return of Mr. Ofori-Atta to Ghana to respond to outstanding investigations and accountability questions concerning his tenure as Finance Minister.
According to him, accountability cannot be convenient, selective or determined by political affiliation. A political party that demands transparency from an incumbent government must equally demonstrate the courage to demand answers from individuals associated with its own administration.
He suggested that the NPP’s credibility on accountability would be strengthened by applying the same standards to its former officials rather than appearing to reserve its strongest demonstrations for political opponents.
In his Facebook commentary, Mr. Gbede stated:
“NPP Demo is a noisy exhibition of desperation for political relevance, intellectual bankruptcy and misplaced priorities. Just ignore Agorsor Foster Shine and his friends!”
He further urged the public not to be distracted by what he considers unnecessary political theatrics, insisting that Ghana deserves an opposition that is intellectually grounded, consistent in its demands and committed to the broader national interest.
