In the wake of recent tribal clashes that have shaken the Nkwanta South Municipality, the Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadzo Gyapong, has taken decisive action, ordering a halt to all Yam Festival activities. The move, announced following a meeting with local chiefs and community leaders, aims to quell tensions and prioritize the restoration of peace and unity in the area.

The Minister expressed deep concern over the loss of life and the overall impact of the conflict on the community. A key focus of the Minister’s address was the disruption to education caused by the clashes. Senior High School students, preparing for their crucial West African Senior School Certificate Examinations, have been particularly affected. To ensure these students can continue their studies and sit for their exams, arrangements are being made to relocate them to other schools. The Minister also confirmed that no final-year exams would be held within the Nkwanta South Municipality until the situation stabilizes.

The government is working to address the underlying causes of the conflict and provide support to those affected.

Amidst the ongoing tensions in Nkwanta South, the Ghana Military High Command, led by Brigadier General Paintsil, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, and Brigadier General S.K. Amengor, Commander of 16 Artillery Brigade, has issued a strong caution to the youth of the Nkwanta South Municipality and its surroundings.

The military leaders addressed the circulation of what they described as “fake news,” specifically denying allegations that the military is supporting any particular tribe in the conflict. In their address, the military officials condemned those spreading misinformation and warned that anyone found creating unnecessary tension on social media would face arrest. They emphasized that the military’s sole mission is to protect lives and property and called for peace and unity within the community. This statement aims to reassure residents of the military’s impartiality and commitment to maintaining order during this challenging period.
